Heavy Periods- Menorrhagia

Every women is different, the amount of blood you may lose during your period is difficult to measure. It is assumed that the average amount is about 8 tsps., so if you find that you are changing your sanitary protection every hour or so, this would be classed as a heavy period.
Causes

Heavy bleeding can often be a symptom of other gynaecological conditions such as:

  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Polyps of the womb
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Cancer of womb

It is essential that you see your doctor, so that they can investigate the heavy bleeding and rule out any serious conditions.

For many women there is no serious medical condition causing the heavy bleeding. It may be due to an imbalance between the oestrogen and progesterone in your system, may be your blood does not clot as efficiently in your womb. Stress can lead to heavy bleeding and ironically so can anaemia.( which leads to a vicious cycle). A contraceptive coil (non- Mirena) may also cause heavy periods.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapies can be used alongside conventional treatments or alone depending on any medical conditions to reduce the blood loss.

I have found that reflexology combined with nutritional and supplement advice may help.

Period Pain – Dysmenorrhea

Most women suffer some discomfort before or during their periods, but about ten percent suffer severe pain, often lasting from a few hours to days and affect their working and personal lives.

Causes

It is thought that period pains, whether mild or severe are caused by the cells in the lining of the womb releasing unhealthy/ “bad” prostaglandins when the womb lining begins to shed during your period. This release stimulates the womb to contract. If your levels of bad prostaglandins are high these natural muscular contractions will become painful.

Other Causes

Period pain may be due to other conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids.

If you suffer severe period pains, particularly if it is accompanied by heavy prolonged bleeding it is important to visit your doctor to have it investigated.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapies such as reflexology may help, in combinations with nutritional advice and supplements.

“ I noticed that I had to take less pain killers during my period after my reflexology treatment and my period was lighter and shorter. With my following period I didn’t take any at all” - Miss M

“ After 3rd treatment I had a period with no pain and it only last 5days, previously it could last 2- 4 weeks” - Miss C
