Natural alternatives for the Menopause
As an experienced complementary therapist, I have found that combining acupuncture or reflexology with nutritional advice may provide natural effective relief from some of the numerous symptoms from hormonal imbalance such as the menopause.
What is the menopause?
The menopause is a natural part of the ageing process. Every woman who has periods will go through the menopause at sometime in her life, usually between the age of 42 and 58. The experience of the menopause can vary greatly from one woman to another. For some it can be completely trouble free, but for many it may be a difficult and uncomfortable time. The drop in the levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone cause the symptoms of menopause.
What are the symptoms of menopause?
There are a number of symptoms attributed to the menopause, such as:
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Emotional changes such as mood swings, anxiety and forgetfulness
- Dry skin and hair
- Low libido
- Vaginal change of dryness, leading to painful intercourse and infections
- Incontinence and urinary infections
- Irregular periods
- Weight gain
- Generalised itching
Natural alternatives to the menopause
Many women are offered Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to ease their symptoms by their doctors. Some women prefer a more natural approach, without the possible side effects of HRT.
Using acupuncture or reflexology with a change in your diet, may help to relieve hormonal imbalance such as the menopause.
I often incorporate aromatherapy and holistic stress management techniques in the treatments to help with relaxation and emotional changes.
